SO GOOD THAT IT MAKES YOU HORNY?

August 10th, 2010

This movie is so friggin’ dope! I see this spinning through 3am programming minutia, bang – Jurrassic Park on TNT- and I’m think, “damn, those dudes know drama!”

Sammy L – such a G!

But, alas, this is merely a segue to the main event:

this is real

This is a real acronym. And these people are out for love, 90’s dinosaur love.

Peep this

WIZ AND R-LES: BEAN BUFFOONERY

August 8th, 2010

Another shunnny day in Beantown USA. Packed into the quad surrounding Boston’s City Hall were thousands of hungry hip hop fans and curious passerby’s on tippy toes to see my smooth jamz main dude Ryan Leslie and horticulture enthusiast  and hot-spitter Wiz Khalifa.  Just so my subtlety doesn’t go over on any of you, when I say they were hungry fans, yes, the anticipation was palpable, but what I really mean is this crowd was hungry due to the amount of puff in the air.   If you found yourself in the heart of the crowd yesterday you were likely catching a second hand by 6pm.

crowd

No stranger to a fervent following though was headliner Wiz Khalifa whose fresh squeezed mixtape “Kush and Orange Juice” obliterated the mixtape circuit several weeks previous and was rumored to be the most searched keyword string on Google the day of it’s release.

Joining Wiz was one of vitaminTHICK’s fondest DJ’s, DJ Bonics. You may have heard Bonics spin on P-burg’s radio or in the clubs, but few people outside of the Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Southside, Downtown area (shout out Pittsburgh! Timebomb! Shop 412!) might not know that Bonics is Wiz’s DJ. In earnest, I didn’t know this either.

Before Wiz took stage, Bonics started the show off with some brooding, heavy-hitting jams a la’ Jeezy “Loose My Mind” … some LBanks “Beamer Benz or Bently” featuring Juelz (”my wrists look like frozen, Poland Spring water” … hilarious) .

To be honest, its my feeling that this is where the event went wrong…If you make a bunch of young hip hop kids wait too long, they are going to get restless, bored, and given the venue, likely dig deeper into their narcotics satchel…Just my thoughts.  So 40 minutes later these kids were only that much more “ridiculous” *hint*, maybe a little anxious *hint*; couple that with the hype of seeing Wiz, and you get this:

The vitaminTHICK squad took to the high ground (…easy, there is no double entendre) where we found some scattered shade.  The Reebok and PaperFashion teams were also in attendance (BLOCKHEAD From the D Block Blog! Ayyy)

In continued delinquent behavior, a crowd found there way to the mezzanine rootop of the building overshadowing the rear of the stage.

Wiz would eventually come back on and finish his set.

THANK ME (IF YOU HAVE TIME)

July 30th, 2010

I don’t like to participate in the mass market hype machine because frankly, mass market is usually pretty beat, but seeing as Drake has become a collaboration platform onto himself I felt compelled to weigh in on the debate.

Long story short, I disagree that this is a “start-to-finish” album.  Granted, this album is meant to make the cash registers ring, and therefore has targeted the most fertile and possibly the most fervent consumer – the hip hop heads – but I felt like Bun should have gotten a feature, and I would have liked to have seen some mash up with dance/electronic or even some indi-rock cats.  Maybe a Killers feature, JunkieXL, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – I know what you’re saying, and yeah, I get the economics, and I also see the argument that we don’t need another 808’s or another wave of Daft Punk rehashes, but I just wanted a little nod to the oldschool (BunB) and a sprinkling of some new ideas (the aforementioned).

That’s all I’m sayin’.

The cliff notes on the album are as follows:

VITAMINTHICK X DJ HEVAN

July 27th, 2010

head down_1_small

If you have gone out in Boston over the last 5 years, odds are you have partied with Dj Hevan supplying the soundtrack. Dude spins literally EVERYWHERE now… and it all started with his mixtape cassettes back at the Zoo (UMass). As one of the more versatile DJ’s in the greater Boston area, Hev can move from rocking the block with the truest hip hop beats to orchestrating the club with the freshest electronic sounds.

We dig his mixtapes, and he digs vitaminTHICK, so naturally, it was an easy match.

Make sure to check out Hevan spinning all over Boston as he reps vT and keeps the party live.  (One stipulation of this deal is that Hev MUST play Skee Lo’s “I Wish” every time we are in attendence… No matter what mix he is in.)

Also, visit the download page on his website for a variety of mixtapes/tracks for $Free.99.

Be on the lookout for more projects involving DJ Hevan and vitaminTHICK in the near future! (… did somebody say “ThiXtape”??)

Be Easy!

SUMMERTIME WATER SPORTING

July 25th, 2010

Shark fishing; that new new maritime activity.  A little over-the-side photo by “the captain”, Johnny Harker.  From sling-shotting Drew and I around on an innertube behind his boat, back in the day, to wrangling 8.5 Blue Sharks.

A growing up tale like few others.  What can I really say?   Elevate your game..
